Alexander M. Koch is a 12th generation Mainer with a love for history, community, and the natural world. His ancestors come from across Maine and elsewhere, including Washington State, Ontario, New Brunswick, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Italy. He grew up around Maine and has also lived briefly in Oregon, California, and Washington states. He currently resides in Unity, Maine.

Alexander currently teaches Middle School English and Maine History at the Ecology Learning Center’s Ecology Bridge Program.

He has a deep love of history and the Maine woods, sustainable communities, and the written word. He graduated in December 2019 with a B.S. in Parks & Forest Resources and an M.S. in Environmental Studies & Sustainability in May 2021, both from Unity College.

Most recently Alexander was the recipient of a National Association for Interpretation student scholarship to the 2019 NAI National Conference in Denver, CO. He is a member of the NAI’s Cultural and Historical Interpretation Section.

He was a recipient of the Maine Campus Compact’s 2019 Heart & Soul Award.

He also won first prize in the 2017 National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest for his submission “The Breath and Breadth of the Maine Woods.” He has received numerous honors during his academic career at Unity College including being awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award, the Unity Award, and the Creativity Award at Unity College student conferences.

Alexander serves on the boards of directors for Unity Barn Raisers in Unity, Maine, as Board President of the Unity Public Library, and as Secretary for Maine Woods Forever which is a statewide organization based in Oakland, Maine. He also served on the Maine Land Conservation Task Force, the Final Report of which can be found here. 

His poetry has been published in Malus Zine, The Avocet, District Lit, the Kerf, little somethings press, Red River Review, Dovecote Magazine, and elsewehere. He has an essay out in the Issue 13 of Malus Zine. His photography has been published in Unity Commons, a student publication at Unity College, and an exhibit of poetry and photography was held in 2019 at The Leonard Craig Gallery, Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, Unity, Maine.
